What’s the best way to upgrade RAM on my computer?
Question by ██████████: What’s the best way to upgrade RAM on my computer?
Ok, so I want more RAM cause I’m having 3D classes and my computer isn’t handling it. It’s ok other than that. And my dad just happens to be going on a business trip and he said he’ll be stopping in Dubai which means cheap shopping and he asked me if I needed anything so I thought I’d get him to buy me hardware.
So this is what I have so far:
Intel E8400 3+Ghz core2duo
ASUS G31 motherboard with HDMI control (P5KPL-AM EPU)
4GB 2X2GB
Club 3D ATI 4850 1GB VGA
I’m actually not at my computer, I’m at my parents house. So I don’t know the exact brand of RAM, but if the motherboard helps, maybe you can give me an idea of what kind of RAM I should tell him to get.
Or should I get him to just buy everything from scratch? (New sticks of RAM, completely replacing the old)
I’d like 16 if possible, so rendering is faster. I don’t know if more is possible.
Also, I just thought of something, can my board even have that many RAM sticks? What do you recommend?

I would suggest always get the memory matched as close as possible, old superstition to avoid vendor or brand differences.
About the rendering… maybe you might want a faster processor, probably a Quad-core and of course do not forget a an extra Hard Drive where the computer can render the files onto instead of using your main OS hard drive. Always helps to have another hard drive for video rendering and saving huge files.

well your pc’s RAM slots use ddr2 type ram. It can only handle 4gb of RAM maximum. Honestly, that motherboard just isnt going to cut it, you will need to upgrade motherboard, then you will need to upgrade power supply because stock ones supply just enough power for your components so your pc wont turn on if you add that video card.
heres a better list of what you will need:
new motherboard: it will set you back a good $ 150 and above
a different type of processor: make sure you get one thats intel and NOT AMD, amd processors always run really hot so your fans will be on constantly! get one of these (i3,i5,i7) they will run cool and never loud. Try getting a quad core one, they cost about $ 250USD!
RAM: 4gb is just enough to game on a regular pc, since your’e going to be running 3d i think you should really loud up on ran, atleast 6GB but more would be amazing for your pc
Power supply: you will need one around 800 Watts
video card: that one is fine, but i recommend getting one thats hdmi, the graphics will look way better!
Thats basically it, If you don’t want to build everything like i said here i would suggest buying a good PC and then putting in the 3d video card and upgrading the ram. Thats the cheapest and easiest way. Good luck

I checked the specs according to the name of the board you have, and it says it can’t take more than 4gb ,anyway ,first of all you should get a motherboard that can handle more than 4gbs of ram ,and most importantly use a 64bit operating system because the 32 bit operating system won’t use the extra ram even if your board can handle it,your graphic card is outdated too ,2008 or so ,I’m not sure,so it would be best to upgrade you’re graphic card, you’re processor is good enough, you can stick to it if you don’t want to spend that much ,but make sure to get a motherboard compatible with your processor

4 GB is the most ram that board can use, CPU is the only other thing that you can upgrade there, if you can happen to find something like a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 for a good prices thats about it, and that will be very hard to find.
Other option is upgrade the board, CPU and ram. probably looking atleast 500$ US for something like that

>In my opinion, the best way to upgrade is to go on line to Crucial and download their activex scanner and let them tell you what you have and what you can upgrade to:
