Question by ~Lavender~: What’s a paper-based test center?
I’m registering online for the TOEFL exam in UAE and there’s this option for CBT (computer-based test center) in Dubai or a PBT (paper-based test center) in Dubai. What do the terms mean, and which one do I choose?

Basically you have a choice if you want to do the test on a computer in a computer based test center, or to do the test on paper, like using a pencil and coloring in the dots for the answers. The one you choose depends on how you prefer. If you like computer tests, then that will be the one you choose…if you don’t like computers, then do it on paper.

I teach for the TOEFL in Japan. Bascially it means exactly what it says. You can take the test either on a computer or with paper and pencil. Both are supposed to be the same test, but my students say the computer one is a bit easier. If you are not comfortable using a computer though, choose the paper and pencil version. Good luck!

The computer based test is one where the questions are presented on a computer and you use the computer to answer
A paper-based test is the traditional one, using test papers and written answers.
Choose which you are most comfortable with; if you have used computers in your learning then take the computer test, often they score automatically and give more or less instant results where a paper test usually has to be marked by a human.
