Question by caestates2004: Can you use AMERICAN electronics (computers, hair straigtners, etc) in DUBAI?
Visiting Dubai for a month. Can I bring my laptop and hair straightner and use an adaptor of some sort to make them fit in their plugs?
Also, where can I buy these adaptors in the U.S. or Dubai?
And how much?

Well there is no such law banning the use of electronis of any make from being used in the UAe , unless otherwise it is damages or hurt the cultural ,religious or social settings in the country. Using a electronic item like laptops etc cause no such damage . Please make sure that the laptop has no materials stored in it which do so. And be sure u don have any custom made electronic device that hurts the sentiments of the country. You can find the adapters in all major supermarkets and malls like Carrefour, Lulu etc .

You can buy adapters in any supermarket to fit the 3 pin plugs for 1 – 2 USD. As long as the voltage is matching with the 220 Volt here in Dubai.
This is how the plug looks like: http://www.startpagedubai.com/travel/electrical_power_plug_in_the_UAE.htm

wall sockets in the uae are three pin same as in the uk, however strangely appliances sold there are two pin and need an adaptor.

It’s not the pins nor adaptors that really matters… it’s the voltage and frequency (or Hertz to others).
American appliances are predominantly 110VAC/60Hz.
UAE is 220VAC/50Hz. Notice the difference…?
If your appliances say “AUTO-VOLT” or 90-240VAC and 50-60Hz, then fine. You are, along with your appliances is as safe as it can be.
However, if not – then you have a problem. Wrong voltage but corect frequency will burn your appliance an correct voltage (110VAC) but wrong frequency (50Hz but yours is 60Hz) will (if dryer) not heat up as expected and will reduce the blowing power (the motor will be slow).
Hope this is the answer you are looking for.
Goodluck !

Yes you need to get an adaptor (with built it voltage convertor) to suit UK outlets because the sockets and voltage here is the same as in the UK. You have 60hz electricity in the US, but pretty much any appliance will run ok on 50 hz.
You will find an adaptor easier in the US.
