Question by Asim Floyd Rai: My External Hard Drive is Dead? if it is how can I repair it without going to tech?
hi, Everyone..I’m living in Dubai (UAE) I really need help in this becoz I have loads of family pics, videos and important documents in this drive!

Ok here is a story: 6 months ago I bought a

MAXTOR ONETOUCH 4 : 500 GB Hard Drive.
PN: 9NT2A4-500
* it has a power plug and Led
*Colour: Black

Since yesterday it was working fine but today morning as I was busy using my laptop with my hard drive connected to laptop – suddenly a pop sound came in Multiplug where I had connected my Hard drive & Laptop’s power plugs. I checked there and smell too but nothing smell. So i was back to laptop again using internet. My biggest mistake was not to check hard drive logo in my laptop. But after a few hours I checked MY COMPUTER i didn’t see ONE TOUCH (hard drive) logo and I tried to reconnect my H/D but i didnt see any LED Light of H/D, no sound of Fan, Nothing…..! so it was completely dead!

Then I opened the cover of Hard drive and checked if something is burned inside H/D but nothing all was fine and clean…Then again i thought H/D plug is burned so i bought a ADAPTOR of 12 Volt and plugged in Multiplug and H/D but no sign of hard drive!

-So can you tell me that if it is completely dead?
- if it is then do you think my all Files are completely gone?
-If it is dead then can u tell me how can i recover at home by myself?

- Oh! by the way I’m living in Dubai ( UAE) If i can’t repair at home then can you tell me how much it will cost me to repair at any repairing shop in Dubai?

I’ll be really happy n glad if you can help me by giving me the best solution!

God bless you! and thank you so much in advance!
@ Spencer : Pop sound i mean not from laptop but from Multiplug , its like electric circuit failure becoz after that sound there was no power into my hard drive!

Thank you anyway!

The pop sound you hear was probably just the drive resetting after a software error. Im not sure about retrieving the files.. but you can try reformatting the drive (will erase the data)

If possible, try to connect it directly to the motherboard, IF IT AT LEAST spins!

HDDGuru site mentioned on the page 2 is a good place to get in touch with the data recovery specialists, it is really costly, maybe a thousand dollars or more.
